Product is king

An important lesson from great companies

Take a look at all the great companies: OpenAI, Spotify, Stripe, Supabase, Zoom, etc... They all do one thing very well.

It is not marketing, it is PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT. Product is the king at these companies.

They spent tons and tons of resources and time on developing and improving the product. You and me as a customer, we don't give a single fuck if these companies make money, right? The only thing that binds the customer and the company is the product. But we pay for the product and later there develops a more human connection with the company's team if they are small. I'm sidetracking a bit but this is what it is.

Stripe spends a lot on their products. Look at their documentation site, it is an asset. Look at OpenAI, their products are improving day by day. And all the other great companies. Marketing is probably the second, or, perhaps, the last priority for them. Posthog is great, not just their product but their ideas and opinions about development and distribution.

So what can we learn from them?

  1. Make the customers love the product, not by forcing it via ads or some shit. When was the last time you bought a product reading a cold email?
  2. Once the customers love the product, iterate on it, make it better continuously. Make the integration go from 10 lines of code, to just 1 line.
  3. Diversify the company with more products, this should probably be the last step, I say that because most great companies do it once they get to a certain stage in their growth.

Let's build great useful products and invest more in it. Make the world fucking like the world.

Cheers!
